The Philippine National Stadium Project

Our national sports complex

I did not realize that there was an existing plan called the National Sports Complex at UP (NASCUP). I go for this plan if (1) there is sufficient space at UP - sufficient including space for further expansion once the NASCUP is built and (2) infrastructure in terms of roads etc are in place.

The Athlete’s Village can be converted into dormitories. The sports facilities can be used by UP and local leagues. Imagine the possibilities.

Cagayan de Oro second district Rep. Rufus Rodriguez on Tuesday urged his colleagues from the House committee on youth and sports development to support a bill seeking the construction of a “world class” football stadium in the Philippines worth P300 million.

Rodriguez, as proposed under House Bill 4298, hopes to provide a “home” for the Philippine Azkals, the country’s national football team.

Transforming Rizal Memorial is a short term solution and is not sustainable in the long run. I agree more with the Clark solution, but a high speed train system should be built in parallel. Otherwise, who’d go there and watch the games?

A recent look at the Seoul Olympic Stadium, whose construction began in 1977, and opened in 1984 (seven years).

After the 1988 Olympics, it has not been used for any major world sport event. With 70k seating capacity, it would be hard to fill it up for local sporting events. Seoul United FC used it as their home field for some time but moved to a smaller, Hyochang Stadium (capacity of 18k).

London’s decision to create a stadium for 2012 with a temporary maximum seating capacity, and Jamsil being relatively unused after the 1988 Olympics, should be a good lesson when creating a stadium. We should look at its purpose. We should plan for its sustainability.

Jamsil is a result of South Korea’s ambition to be recognized in the state of world affairs. While no data is available, just look at the turf, and you’ll see what sustainability means. It is inefficient to use if you cannot fill it up.

I think 30k is still the ideal seating capacity of a stadium. If we are to build one, it should have that capacity.

Garish Marikina Sports Complex

Seeing the condition of the Marikina Sports Complex (for the #uaap opening), I couldn’t help but cringe and ask “WHY? WHY THERE?” I can think of better alternatives, but it’s done. And I wonder if this condition is similar to other sports complexes in the country.
